leftheria
Bitzanaki runs an icon studio in the Old Town of Chania,
behind the Metropolitan Church on a street name Agion Deka
(13).
In her cozy and warm environment Eleftheria has devoted
herself faithfully to creating Byzantine Icons which are
copies of original Icons which have been painted in Crete
during the 15th century.
he
icons are painted on natural massive wood and on carved
wooden boards, and the preparation base is made up of
fabric and natural materials (rabbit glue and Gesso di
Bologna).
The colors are limited to four (4) only,
black-white-yellow and red (Polignotia Color grate) and
egg tempera. The gilding of the icons is 23 3/4K gold leaf
on clay base, and polished with a Semi-precious stone
(agate).
leftheria’s many years of experience and participation in
exhibitions enable her to teach icon painting in her
studio also. The lessons are on a individual basis, small
groups or intentional courses. Notes are given to students
as well as suggestions for book reading and slides are
shown. Talks are also given on the subject of “Basic
Principles of Traditional Icon Painting”.
alking through the Old Town of Chania should include a
visit to Eleftheria’s Icons studio and will give you a
chance to explore the traditional aspects of icon painting.
